Grammar: the verb ‘to be’ (affirmative form) & pronouns

  1. The personal pronouns:

A personal pronoun is a word that replaces a noun. It refers to a specific person or thing. The personal pronouns in English are:

I – first person singular yo

You – second person singular tú, usted

He/she/it – third person singular él/ella/ello

We – first person plural nosotros/as

You – second person plural vosotros/as, ustedes

They – third person plural ellos/as

  • In English there is no formal way of addressing the second person singular or plural (as there is in Spanish). Therefore we use ‘you’ in both cases.  En inglés, no distinguimos el “tú/vosotros/as” o el “usted(es)”.

  • Examples: I am a woman > (Yo) Soy una mujer. You are Clara > (Tú) eres Clara. We are in the room > (Nosotros) estamos en la aula.

  • In English, the pronouns have to appear with a conjugated verb, unless there is a proper noun or a noun.

  1. Possessive adjectives:

Possessive adjectives show whom something belongs to. For example: This is my book.

The possessive adjectives are:
